Chapter 15: Leftovers

Amber's POV

Loretta Branham opened her front door in East Cobb with a dish towel over her shoulder and both arms already out.

"There she is," she said. "There's my girl."

I walked into her hug on the porch and let her rock me side to side.

She was sixty-six years old and smelled of Jergens and turkey, and she had signed my birthday cards for twelve years.

"I came to say goodbye," I said into her shoulder. "I didn't want to leave it at a card."

"Goodbye, nothing. You'll eat first."

She held me out at arm's length and looked past me.

Darius stood two steps down on the walk, in a pressed shirt, holding a pound cake in both hands.

He had to bend his head under the porch light.

"And this," Loretta said, "is the young man."

"Yes, ma'am," said Darius. "Darius Lockett. I brought a cake."

"Of course you did. Look at the size of him, Amber. You'd need a ladder."

"Loretta."

"I'm sixty-six, I'm allowed." She took the cake and patted his arm. "Come in out of the cold, honey."

The house was full.

It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The old church group still held its leftovers party every year.

Twenty people filled the den and the dining room, with paper plates and a football game on mute.
