Chapter 16: The Stairs
We did not make it past the fourth step.
It was Sunday afternoon, and the sun slanted through the narrow window at the stair landing.
I had come down for water in his T-shirt and nothing else.
He had come down behind me, and he had put one hand on the banister over my head and said, "Sit."
I sat.
The fourth step was hard and cool against the backs of my thighs.
I leaned into the corner where the wall met the banister, with my shoulders propped on the wall.
He went down two steps below me and turned to face me.
His eyes were level with my knees.
On his knees on the lower step, he was exactly the right height.
"Lift your arms," he said.
I raised them, and he drew his T-shirt off me over my head and tossed it down the stairwell.
The air in the stairwell was cold on my skin.
He did not give me time to be shy.
His hands went under my knees, and he opened my legs and laid them over his shoulders, one and then the other.
I was bare and spread on a staircase in the afternoon light.
"Darius," I said. "The window."
"There's a tree. There's nobody."
"You checked?" I said.
"First thing I did when we bought the shelves."
I laughed, and he turned his head and kissed the inside of my knee.
He kissed his way down my thigh, slow and wet, to the crease where my leg met my body.
He stopped there and breathed against me.
"You smell so good," he said.
"I smell like soap."
"You smell like you."
His thumbs parted me, and the first stroke of his tongue went all the way from the bottom to the top.
My head hit the wall.
"Oh," I said. "Oh, that's..."
He did it again, slower.
