On Saturday night the Wexcombe autumn gala filled the ballroom of the lake club with two hundred people in black tie.
Chandeliers, a string quartet, and a banner over the stage that read in silver script: Friends of the Lake Foundation.
Posy was at home with her grandmother and the housekeeper, in bed by eight under three fairy lights.
I had checked the knot on her blanket twice before I left.
I wore a green dress that Jasper's tailor had pinned onto me in forty minutes, and Valen wore a black suit he clearly hated.
He took my arm at the door.
"Everyone's looking," I whispered.
"Let them."
Heads did turn, one after another, and the murmurs followed us down the aisle.
The woman from table four lifted a glass to me across the room.
