Chapter 20: Carys's Rules
"The deed in there is a copy," Conrad said, watching the lawyer's car go down the drive. "The original deed is in the bank vault.
"He just walked out of my house with a stolen file, and he did it in front of six witnesses."
"Six and a half," said the cook. "I counted the child."
That afternoon I sat at the kitchen table with a pen, a sheet of the good paper, and no idea how to begin.
Torn rule pieces still lay in a heap on the hall floor, because nobody had wanted to sweep them up.
I wrote the first line.
I crossed it out.
I wrote it again.
Jasper read over my shoulder.
"You're making a new list," he said. "You are a menace."
"The old one is in pieces. Someone has to rule this house."
"Then I'd like to propose rule one."
"Go ahead."
"Jasper gets the last pancake."
"Denied."
When I finished, I pinned it to the cork board in the front hall with a thumbtack.
It said:
One. We eat dinner together at the table, every night, and everyone is invited.
