Chapter 19: Odette Moves
Odette's face went slack for a moment.
Then she smiled again, and the smile cracked down the middle.
"Who put that in your head?" she said to Posy, in a voice I had not heard her use.
"Daddy and Daddy."
"They have been lying to you."
"No," Posy said. "Carys says everybody tells me the truth."
Odette looked at me.
I have been looked at by dogs that wanted to bite me, and it was kinder.
She stood up, folded her napkin into a perfect square, and left without another word.
At eight on Friday morning the whole household was in the front hall.
The housekeeper stood by the stairs with her hands folded, and the cook was beside her in an apron.
The driver, the gardener and two maids hovered in the doorway to the kitchen, because nothing travels faster in a big house than a rumor.
