Chapter 14: Bullpen
Renee's POV
At ten to seven the east wing belonged to us.
I had signed HR's acknowledgment by email at ten of noon, one word, and I had not written anything else all day.
Kyle had worn his collar open from the elevator to the last meeting.
Nobody had said a word to him.
Everybody had looked at his neck, and then at me, and then at their screens.
The underwriting bullpen was a double row of desks with the lamps off and the whole city lit up in the windows behind them.
The only light was the glow of Kyle's monitor, which showed a spreadsheet and the little bouncing logo of the screen saver.
He sat in his chair with his jacket off and his tie loose, watching me come down the aisle.
"Six-fifty," he said. "I'm early."
"You're on file," I said. "You can be anywhere you like."
"Then I like it here."
I put my bag on the floor.
I walked around his desk and swept the binders aside with my forearm.
I sat down on the edge of it with my skirt tight over my knees.
I put my heels on the arms of his chair, one on each side of his hips.
He looked down at my shoes and swallowed.
"Roll in," I said.
He rolled in on the casters until his knees were between mine.
"Skirt," I said.
He took the hem in both hands and pushed it up my thighs, slowly, over the stocking tops, until it bunched at my waist.
His eyes went to my underwear and stayed there.
"You wore the black ones," he said.
"I wore them for you."
"All day?"
"Since six o'clock this morning." I put my hand on the back of his head, on the short bristle of his hair. "I've been thinking about this desk since nine."
He made a low sound and hooked one finger in the lace, and pulled it aside.
