Chapter 12: Harbor Street
"Why is Camilla Arkwright texting you about Harbor Street?" Damon asked.
He said it lazily, with his cheek on Elias's chest and his eyes half shut.
The phone had gone dark again.
Elias's heartbeat under his ear did not change, and Damon, who had listened to a thousand chests, noticed that it did not change.
"She wants to buy their stake," Elias said.
"Harbor Street? The passive fund?"
"They've never answered the accountants. So she tries me. I'm the contact on file."
He turned his head and kissed Damon's hair.
"I told her no four times. I'll tell her a fifth."
"Why does she want a fund with no vote?"
"Because it's the only piece of Kosmas Health you don't own personally," Elias said. "And she hates that."
It made sense.
It made perfect sense, in the dark, at two in the morning, with Elias's arm heavy and warm around his shoulders.
"Okay," Damon said.
"Okay?"
"I'm not going to talk company in a hotel bed." He yawned. "You can bore me about it Monday."
Elias laughed under him, a short startled breath.
Damon fell asleep like that.
It was the first night he had ever slept through beside anyone, and he did not notice until morning.
He woke at nine with sun across his face.
The curtains were open, as Elias must have left them.
Light poured through the glass, over the city, the park, the white tangle of the duvet.
The other side of the bed was empty and still warm.
