Chapter 14: Meridian

Camilla Arkwright's office took up the whole top floor of the Meridian tower, and it had a bar.

The rain came down the glass in sheets.

Damon stood in front of it in a creased dress shirt with a tumbler of her scotch in his hand.

He had not been offered a coat.

On his left wrist, below the cuff, the print of the silk was still faintly red.

He kept finding that his thumb had gone to it.

"You'll want to sit," Camilla said.

"I'll want to know how you knew."

"I read." She settled behind a desk the size of a door. "Your friend is careful, Doctor. Not careful enough."

She slid a folder across the leather.

Inside were printed emails, dozens, with the Harbor Street name in the header and yellow tabs along the edge.

"Four years of correspondence with a lawyer in Stamford," she said. "I obtained them from a clerk who needed money."

"That's a crime."

"It's a Tuesday. Read the tabbed one."

Damon did not want to.

He read it standing, with the scotch going warm in his fist.

It was dated four years ago, and it was addressed to the lawyer, and it was short.

*Do not tell Damon. He is proud, and if he knows he will feel he owes me.*

*Then he will leave. I would rather he never knew.*
