Chapter 16: What My Blood Knows
"I'm not going to faint," Do-yun said.
He was the color of cold porridge.
"You are," Seol said. "Look at the wall."
"I faint at fish. I faint at my own blisters."
"Nobody told me you'd want a cook to hold a bleeding lord."
"Nobody is bleeding yet."
Jae-ryeong sat on the stool in the herb shed at the edge of dusk.
His sleeve was rolled to the elbow, and his arm lay on the folded cloth.
Seol knelt beside him with the long hollow needle.
Seol's hands were quite steady.
Jae-ryeong's were not, and he was the one being stuck.
"Look at me," Seol said, as he had said a dozen times in the dark.
Jae-ryeong looked.
The needle went in below the crook of his arm with a pinch and a long, strange pull.
Blood ran down the glass tube, dark and quick, into the white basin.
It was his own, and he was oddly proud of it.
"It's a good color," Seol said, very low.
"Is that medical?"
"It's personal."
Do-yun made a noise and sat down on the floor.
When the basin held what Seol wanted, he drew the needle and bound Jae-ryeong's arm.
