Chapter 24: Next Door
The new Hollander house had a green front door, and the paint was still tacky.
It was the last Saturday of April, and the whole of Alder Street smelled like cut grass and sawdust.
I stood on the Eastwick porch with my camera and watched Russ carry a recliner up the new front walk.
He was sweating through his flannel and arguing with the recliner.
"Left, Russ," my mother said from the lawn.
"I am going left."
"Your left, not the chair's."
He went left.
She had a clipboard in her hand and a pencil behind her ear.
She had been running the move since seven that morning.
Russ looked back at her over the arm of the chair, and the look he gave her was not about furniture.
My mother pretended not to see it.
She pretended very badly, and she went pink.
