Chapter 7: The Driveway
He pulled into my driveway at twenty past one and put the Camry in park, and the neighbor's dog started barking at once.
I had put a new bulb in the porch light that afternoon.
I told myself it was for the steps, and it lit the whole front of the car, and the dash, and Mateo's face.
"Everybody's going to see," he said.
"Good."
"Paulina."
"Seat back," I said.
He reached down by his knee and the seat slid back with a clunk.
I climbed over the console.
It wasn't graceful, and my knee caught the gearshift.
My hair came down out of its tie and fell across his face, and he was laughing before I had settled.
I sat in his lap facing him, with the steering wheel against my back and my knees on either side of his thighs.
The driver's seat was warm from him.
I put both hands on his cheeks, and I looked at him in the porch light, with my hair hanging around both our faces.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi."
"You were scared for me tonight."
He didn't answer, and his eyes dropped, and I felt his hands settle on my waist.
"I was," Mateo said. "I wanted to put him through the windshield."
"I know."
"I didn't."
"I know that too." I kissed him once, slowly. "Thank you."
I felt him let go of the anger as I did it.
His mouth opened under mine, and his hands slid up my back, and he kissed me back with all of it.
It was a long, deep kiss, with tongues, and when it ended we were both breathing hard.
The windows were already misting at the edges.
