Chapter 18: The Last Bus

"Four hundred seats," said Babi, looking at the phone.

"They want the final pecan," said the tour guide, wiping his eyes with the hem of his polo.

"Do you know how long I've waited to say that sentence?"

"I'm throwing the pecan," said Babi.

"I'm throwing the cherry," said Aksel.

"You always throw the cherry."

"It's my kringle!"

"It's dry, Aksel."

"It is not dry."

"It has been dry since 1984."

"Then why did you marry me?"

"For the mustache," said Babi, and he kissed her on the forehead in front of the entire Chamber of Commerce.

The mayor sniffled.

Soren put one hand over his eyes.

I stood in the middle of the Back Room in yesterday's apron, with a dead cot at my feet.

I realized that I was watching the best fight I had ever seen.

They fought.

By seven the room was full.

Dagny had arrived with a tray of scones and a clipboard, and had appointed herself secretary.

"Item one," she said. "Everyone stop talking."

Nobody stopped.

"We end the feud on the fourth," said Babi.

"We end it after the last bus," said the mayor. "The readers paid for a feud."

"We tell the town on the fourth and end it on the ninth," said Soren, drawing a line down a card.

"One Chamber. One announcement. One day."
