Chapter 11: Wenna
Torvin brought Wenna back at dusk.
He rode in through the postern gate with a bundle across his saddle, and Isabeau knew what it was before she saw the face.
"She was in a cart behind the Marshal's tent," he said, lowering her into Isabeau's arms. "Chained. They'd been questioning her since noon."
Wenna's veil was gone.
Her grey-brown hair hung in dark wet strings, and her white habit was torn open at the back, where the scourge had been.
Her lips were blue.
"Take her upstairs," Isabeau said. "Now."
She laid Wenna on the guest bed in the tower room and sent everyone out.
Then she knelt, and put her hands on Wenna's back, and let the Flame go.
It was easy.
That was the part she couldn't understand.
The cuts closed, and the bruises drained, and the cracked ribs knit under her palms, and the light came as steadily as her own breath.
When it was done, Wenna was breathing evenly and sleeping.
Isabeau sat on the floor beside her and cried.
She hadn't known she was holding it in.
