Chapter 16: The War Table
The council lasted until midnight.
Torvin stood over the war table, a great slab of black oak in the lower hall, with Corvane's map pinned under his fists.
"Twenty thousand," he said. "They hold the river road, the south slope, and both bridges. Our walls will stand a day."
"Two," said Veyron.
"A day and a half, if the Saintess keeps the north gate alive."
"I will," said Isabeau.
Every captain in the room turned to look at her, and she realized none of them had called her hostage in a week.
"What about the Wheel?" said Torvin.
Nobody answered.
It sat on a wagon, a mile out in the valley, wrapped in white canvas.
The scouts had only seen it from afar, a disc of pale metal as wide as a barn door, carried by sixteen oxen.
Veyron's right hand lay flat on the map.
"It hurts like nothing else," he said. "It burns the body and the spirit at once. The last time it was fired, it killed a thousand of my men in a breath."
"And you?"
"I was on the edge of it." He looked at the black line on his wrist. "That was enough."
"It won't be enough this time," Isabeau said.
