Chapter 20: The Bond Freely Made
I knelt on the stone with his head on my knees and thought, this is the moment.
Everyone was waiting for it.
The elder, the Hollow, the Creek, Dunne's wide shoulders at the edge of the ring, Hester's tired face.
They wanted me to bite him and say the words and make it right.
It would make a good story.
I would have hated every line of it.
"Hester," I said. "Is there anything else?"
"Child."
"Anything that isn't the bond."
She looked at me for a long moment.
"There's the Waking cup," she said slowly.
"A gift of blood from a living wolf to a sick one."
"It isn't a Lending."
"It takes nothing from the giver but the blood."
"It won't cure him."
"What will it do?"
"Hold the door open. Three days. Maybe four."
"Then I'll do that."
"It'll hurt you."
"I've been hurt worse tonight."
Hester pulled the silver cup from her bag.
It was a battered thing, dented at the rim, and I knew without asking that she'd carried it for forty years.
