Chapter 17: The Arrest
The officer unfolded his paper and read it in a flat voice.
"Dermot Keane, I have a warrant for your arrest on charges of extortion, illegal gambling and unlicensed lending."
"Those charges are twenty years old," I said.
"The statute was reopened last week," the officer said. He did not look at me.
"By whom?" I asked.
Eugene answered for him. "By a magistrate who takes the Flats seriously, Maeve."
He said it kindly, and the kindness was the cruelest thing in the room.
Dermot set down the glass he had been drying.
His two men by the window had stood up, and I saw their hands move.
"No," Dermot said, without raising his voice. "Sit down, lads. I'll go."
He came out from behind the bar, took off his apron and folded it.
He took his flat cap from the hook and put it on.
"Da, you don't have to."
"I do, girl. If I don't, they take the lads too." He took my face in his hands.
