Chapter 19: Rafe Speaks
Rafe walked down the center aisle in a plain white shirt, with no badge and no jacket.
Three hundred heads turned to follow him.
Eugene let go of the microphone.
"Security," Eugene said, to nobody. "Get him out."
"I'm security," Rafe said. "You fired me this morning."
The chair opened her mouth, saw the cameras, and closed it again.
I stepped away from the podium and put the microphone in Rafe's hand.
He held it for a moment.
"My name is Rafe Hawkins," he said. "I'm thirty-four years old, and I've run security for Saltonstall Holdings for thirteen years."
"My father drove the family's car. I grew up in the carriage house."
"When I was eleven, I saw Eugene Saltonstall's sister die."
His voice did not shake.
"I stood in the boathouse shadow and heard all of it. I have told only one person."
"He let the child drown, and then he let her mother follow."
"I have waited twenty-three years to say that under a light."
Somebody in the third row said, "Oh, God."
