Chapter 20: Her Side
The luncheon was in the long room upstairs at my mother's club on Meeting Street.
Forty women at round tables. White cloths. Chicken salad in tomato cups. A silver bell at the head table for calling the meeting to order.
My mother stood behind it in navy silk and her pearls.
Nobody had told her we were coming.
Gran went in first.
She'd worn the brooch again. She walked between the tables with her pocketbook over her arm.
I came behind her. Then Annie with her cane. Then Callie, last, holding her elbows.
Forty heads turned.
My mother was in the middle of a sentence.
"And I want you to hear it from me, not from the television, because you're my friends."
She saw her mother.
She stopped.
"Mama," she said.
"Don't let me interrupt," Gran said, and sat down at an empty chair at the nearest table, between two women who froze with their forks in the air. "Go on. I'm a member. I've been a member since 1968. I pay my dues."
The president of the club, at the head table, looked at my mother.
My mother looked at the forty women.
She decided. I watched her do it, the same way I'd watched her in the ballroom.
