Chapter 15: What Rowan Gave
Rowan did not say a word in the car.
He did not say one in the elevator either, up fifty-two floors with his hand resting on my back.
In the penthouse he went straight to the kitchen island and took a folded page from his tuxedo pocket.
He laid it on the stone where he had once laid me.
"What is it?" I said.
"My resignation."
I looked at the page.
It was typed on company paper, addressed to the board, and it was signed.
The ink was dry.
"As chief executive," he said. "And as chairman. Effective Friday at nine, before anyone speaks."
"You wrote this before the dinner."
"I wrote it after your mother's folder. I signed it tonight when I watched you stand on that stage."
"Rowan, that's your whole life."
"It's my whole title," he said. "My life was in the front row of that ballroom, wearing green."
I picked up the page.
My hands wanted to shake and I did not let them.
"If you're gone, Tobias walks in."
"Not if you vote against him. That's the point."
