Chapter 17: The Pit
They did not hide.
Lois had wanted to creep around through the trees and come up behind the guards.
The old hunter with the gray beard shook his head and walked straight out onto the ice.
The others followed him in a ragged line.
A boy rode on a woman's back, and a girl in a purple coat walked beside the old hunter.
A teenager with a bow came next, then a young father with a toddler on his hip.
And a large pale woman at the end of it, trudging, with a thermos in her hand that she had forgotten to put down.
The two guards stood up when they saw them.
They were big men, with hunters' shoulders, and each held a spear.
They had full, round faces.
"Go back," said the taller one.
He spoke the old tongue, but Lois could read it from the way he held the spear.
The old hunter did not slow.
"Open it," he said.
"Hurn said no one."
"Hurn is not here."
"He said..."
"Look at me." The old hunter stopped a spear's length away. "Look at your own mother's face. Then look at the pit."
