Chapter 14: Thanksgiving
Dolores's living room held a table for eight, and she had made it seat seven by pushing her couch out into the hall.
Two tablecloths met in the middle, one printed with turkeys and one with roses, under a pyramid of pierogi.
There was a real turkey too, a small one, next to a bowl of sauerkraut that had been cooking since Tuesday.
"Sit," Dolores said from the head of the table, her cane hooked over her chair. "Not there, Magda. There."
There was a chair between Rafa and the woman from 2R.
I sat.
Rafa didn't look at me, which was how I knew he had been looking at me since I came through the door.
Everyone else was being so normal about it that it was almost rude.
The man from 2F passed me the potatoes without a single word.
The couple from 3F argued about whether the gravy needed salt, in the tone of two people who had agreed to argue about something else.
Nobody had said a thing about the pegboard in two days, and that, I understood, was a kindness.
