Chapter 17: Hammer

Chuhe pulled on his trousers and opened the door a hand's width.

The whole ledge was full of people.

Thirty elders in grey and blue stood in a half ring, with lanterns lit against the dusk.

Behind them waited more Hall guards than Chuhe could count.

At their head stood Pei, with a small gold seal on a red cord held out before him.

"The Sect Head's own," he said. "Cast the year the sect was founded. By its authority I call you both out."

Hanjue stepped up beside Chuhe, dressed again, with the sword at his hip.

His face was white and set.

"Come down to the ridge of your own will," Pei said. "The Hall will make it easy."

"I will not come," said Hanjue.

"Kneel, then."

Pei lifted the bronze seal from his sleeve, and its dull orange glow woke.

Chuhe flinched, and felt Hanjue brace.

But the light died.

It dimmed as it reached the doorway, as a candle dims in a draft, and flickered out a hand short of the lintel.

Pei frowned and shook it.

The bronze was only bronze.

"The old man's ward," he said at last, softly, to himself. "He put one on his own door."

One of the elders took a step back.

"We cannot go in, Pei," he muttered. "That is the Founder's house."

"I am aware of whose house it is."

Pei lowered the seal.

For a moment his courteous face was bare, and under it Chuhe saw a tired man who had invested thirty years in a single idea.
