Chapter 18: Midwinter Eve
They spent the second day in the hut with the door shut and the ward holding.
Pei's men did not come closer.
They stood on the ledge in shifts, grey with cold, and ate their rice in silence.
By the third dusk there were nearly a hundred of them.
"It is Midwinter Eve," Hanjue said from the window.
He sat on the cot with the little hammer in his lap, turning it over.
"At dawn the rite begins on the ridge. The guests are already there. Eleven sects, and a great many robes."
"I can count," said Chuhe. "How many in the ring?"
"A hundred and two."
"We have two."
"We have a bun," Hanjue offered, and held up the last of Auntie Wen's bundle.
Chuhe laughed, and broke it in half.
They were eating it, shoulder to shoulder, when the noise began below.
It started far down the path as a low rumble.
Then it came closer, and he heard voices, a great many, singing off key.
Chuhe went to the window.
A long thread of torches was snaking up the Founder's Path.
They were not blue.
They were grey-brown and ragged.
Under every torch walked an outer disciple in a patched robe, with a bucket, a broom or a cooking pot in his hands.
