Chapter 19: The Rite
At the last hour before dawn, Chuhe and Hanjue walked round to the back of the hut.
The cliff face stood there in the dark, plain grey rock.
A thin shape stuck out of it at the height of a man's chest.
It was a blade.
It had no guard and no ornament, only a bare iron tang driven into a crack in the stone.
Rust had eaten the edge, but the back was still straight.
"Nine marks," Hanjue said, touching the tang. "There, there, and there. Quench at first light. His hand."
"It's been standing here three hundred years."
"Two hundred and eighty-odd." Hanjue gave a crooked smile. "I am rounding."
Chuhe took the hilt in both fists and pulled.
It slid out of the rock.
The cliff did not crumble, and no wind rose, and nothing fell.
The stone around the empty crack simply sat there, whole and quiet.
"It held," said Chuhe. "It's still holding. With no one in it."
"Then it will be enough to show them."
He wrapped it in Auntie Wen's apron, and they went down.
The Tomb ridge was the same ridge as on Founding Day, with the same steps and the same split black stone.
