Chapter 14: His Hands on Her Cards

Marguerite lowered her eyes before anyone else could read them.

"Early, my dears, early!" Hadrian came down the great stair in a fur coat with his arms wide.

He had been asleep, or he wanted them to think so, and his smile was as warm as ever.

"The roads were clear, so I sent for my men to help with the Oath. A duke should never lack for company."

"Outer ward," said Bastien. "All forty. Now."

The captain was already shouting orders across the yard.

Hadrian laughed and clapped his cousin on the shoulder, and Bastien let him.

Then Bastien took Liora's bag out of her hand, set it on the cobbles, and took her hand instead.

"Come," he said.

He walked her up three flights of stairs without speaking once.

His bedroom was warm, with a fire already built and the bed turned down.

He shut the door and turned the key, and then he stood still with his back to it.

"You were going to leave me a pile of coins on a pillow," he said.

"I took them back."

"I noticed. I went through your room first."

She almost laughed, and it came out wet.

"Sit on the bed, Liora."

She sat.

He crossed to her cloak, which she had dropped on the chair, and found the deck in its inner pocket.

"Gran's rule says you cannot read your own cards," he said. "It says nothing about mine reading yours."
