Chapter 21: The Frost Bridge
The window showed her a ring of shields.
She saw it in the Sun card at dawn, small and bright, with the snow coming down.
There was a stone shelf and a post, and her own hand in a green sleeve holding a lidded cup.
She saw a knight in grey beside her, and a wall of iron backs between her and the north.
She did not see a bolt, and she did not see a man kneeling, and then the window shut.
She told Bastien at the stable yard at dusk, with the torches lit.
"It might not be the end of the picture," she said.
"It is more picture than I have ever had," said Bastien.
The Longest Night came down early and white.
The snow fell thick and soft over the gorge, and the far bank glittered with the torches of two hundred barons.
Liora crossed first, with the captain on her left and the young woman in the grey tunic on her right.
Ten knights walked behind them, and she did not look back.
