Chapter 13: The Photo
At seven the next morning the three of them stood on chairs in the camp dining room and said it out loud.
I watched from the kitchen doorway, in a clean jacket, with a tray of muffins in my hands.
The whole squad sat at the long tables.
Forty players and a dozen staff, every one of them silent, with their forks in the air.
Mercer spoke first.
"The luck was never hers," he said.
"It was never in her body.
We lied.
I lied, and I let a lie run."
"I made it up," said Dex.
"I'd like that on the record.
Also I'm sorry."
"We played badly last night," Bram said, in his low voice.
"That was us.
She's a person.
She makes the bread.
If any of you call her anything she doesn't want to be called, you'll answer to the three of us."
For a long moment nobody moved.
The left back, the one who had drawn the cow, put down his fork.
