Chapter 14: The Cemetery
Santo was out of the car before I had it in park.
He did not run along the path.
He cut straight up the slope between the headstones, bent low, and he reached Nico in the time it took me to find my gun.
I saw him drop on top of the boy and roll him behind a granite angel.
The second shot hit the angel's wing, and stone chips rained down on both of them.
"Stay down," Santo said, loud enough for me to hear it. "Nico, flat. Cover your head."
"Let go of me!"
"No."
"Let go!"
"Not tonight. Be furious tomorrow," Santo said. "Tonight I'm lying on you."
I almost laughed, and the thing in my chest that was not a laugh made me move.
The shots had come from the bottom of the hill, from the gate, from a car with its door standing open.
I had left the Lincoln's engine running with the headlights on, and that was the last light on the hill.
