Chapter 23: Longest Night
The sauna had been hot since noon, and the cedar smelled of resin and woodsmoke.
Outside, the longest night of the year was clear and black, with stars down to the lake.
Casimir set me on my feet inside the door and shut it behind us.
I looked at him in the red light of the stove.
He had loosened his collar, and the bite mark stood out on his shoulder.
"Take it off," I said. "Everything."
He did.
He stripped slowly, with his eyes on mine, and I felt his want through the bond like a hand on my skin.
I undressed too, and left my coat and scarf and every other thing in a heap on the floor.
We stood bare in the heat.
"Sit," I said.
He sat on the lower bench.
I climbed into his lap, facing him, with my knees on either side of his hips.
His hands settled on my waist.
Mine rested on his shoulders, over the pale crescent of my own teeth.
"I have something to say," I said. "I wrote it down."
"You wrote it down?"
"My grandmother taught me. If it matters, put it on paper first."
I had folded it small inside my sleeve.
I didn't take it out.
I knew it by heart.
"Casimir Ness," I said. "I promise I'll never send you a letter."
