Casimir's POV
The Alpha does not sit on a motion filed in his own name.
So at noon the long table in the council room had one empty chair at the head.
Down the hall, the door of Leighton's study stayed shut.
I was no longer allowed at the council table.
I sat on the public bench with two hundred wolves behind me.
Sigrid sat down beside me with her deed in her lap.
She had put on her good coat.
She had not looked at me since the dock.
Now her knee pressed against mine, hard, and I took it as the only apology I was going to get.
The council chair was a heavy old man who spoke slowly and never repeated himself.
He read the motion aloud.
"That the house on Kettle Point be held as pack land and returned to the pack's book."
"Does the holder of the house wish to speak?"
Sigrid stood.
She did not raise her voice, because she did not have to.
"It was given to me in April at the county office," she said.
