Chapter 21: The River
"She threw her in the river," I said. "Jesse, she threw Callie out the tower window."
He didn't ask me how I knew.
He put the truck in gear and drove down the river road toward the bluff.
"If the glass breaks in the water," he said, "she comes back in the water."
"I know."
"I know, Jesse. Drive."
The river ran past the bottom of Rountree Hill fast and brown, and two hundred yards down it went white over the shoals.
The tower window at the top of the bluff was dark now.
I went in to my knees with Jesse's flashlight.
The cold came through my jeans.
"Callie," I said to my hand. "Am I close?"
My hand squeezed twice.
I waded downstream along the bank, under the bluff, in mud that sucked at my sneakers.
"Now?"
It squeezed twice.
We worked that bank until the flashlight died at four, and Jesse made me sit in the truck with the heater on.
At the first gray light I went back in.
This time Jesse tied his tow rope around my waist and wrapped the other end twice around his own forearm.
