Chapter 20: The Supper
Ines's POV
Forty of us sat around the long table.
I looked at each face in turn, keeping my eyes busy so my hands wouldn't shake.
The old men sat on the long left side in their black suits with their hats on their knees.
The captains and their wives sat on the right.
The priest was at the foot, near me, with the green book beside his plate.
Carmela had been placed at the head, at her son's right hand, in the chair beside the empty card.
Biagio sat at Nico's left.
Nobody had moved the seat, and nobody had moved the card that said Serafina.
The twins sat between me and Teo with napkins tucked into their collars.
Gianni was kicking the table leg with a yellow boot.
Luca had decided that the candles were a birthday cake and was waiting, with great patience, for someone to sing.
I had put the boys where I could see them.
I had promised Nico they would be asleep or with Carmela for anything that mattered.
The plan was that Carmela would carry them up before Nico spoke about Biagio.
The ring and Rocco's name were different.
The boys had a right to be at the table when someone said who their father was.
Dinner was long.
The antipasti went round, and the soup, and the pasta in its big blue bowl.
Nobody spoke of anything but the weather and the price of diesel and the new bridge.
It was the strangest meal of my life.
Forty-one people ate Carmela's cooking and said how good it was, and I could feel every one of them waiting.
