Chapter 8: The Reserve
Nico's POV
My wife was buried in the Catholic cemetery on Sixth Street, under a marble angel my mother had picked out.
I went on Friday morning before the sun was up.
I went every Friday, and in fourteen months I had never missed one.
I brought white roses from the stall by the church and laid them on the grass at the foot of the stone.
I stood with my hands folded.
I didn't pray, because I had stopped when I stopped sleeping.
"I'm going to marry again," I said.
It sounded strange in the cold air.
"I wanted you to hear it from me.
"Not from my mother, and not from the island."
The angel looked past me at the sky.
"She's a doctor.
"You'd like her.
"She told me the truth the first night I met her, to my face.
"Nobody in that house had done that since your funeral.
"You never lied to me either, Serafina.
"But you never told me anything that cost you."
I hadn't known that until I said it.
I stood in the gray light and turned the words over.
They were true.
Serafina had been a clever, composed, easy woman with a head for figures and a way of making a room feel looked after.
