Chapter 16: Silver
The hall did not gasp.
It made a low sound, and then every lord on every bench was on his feet.
Hakon stood in the silver pool of light with the moonglass blazing above his head.
Through the grey cloth of his coat, his hip shone.
At his shoulder Joren's did the same.
Two small crescents, side by side, in front of two hundred witnesses.
"Mark of the Moon!" a lord shouted. "That's a mate's mark!"
"On the Heir!"
"On the guard!"
The old Priest lowered the glass slowly with trembling hands.
On the dais Duke Wexel rose to his full height, and the smile was gone from his face.
In its place was something worse, a hard bright satisfaction.
"My lords," he said, and his voice carried over the din. "My lords, be silent."
They quieted by degrees.
"The Reading of the Heir is complete," he said. "The Heir is not unmarked."
He let it sit.
"The Heir bears a mate's mark, taken in secret from a commoner, a sworn servant of the Crown."
