Chapter 14: Old Blood
I walked down the quarry road with Ronan one step behind me and his hands open at his sides.
Dewitt Faulk poured coffee into the thermos lid and held it out.
"It's still hot," he said. "You look cold, Ms. Linwood."
"Let him go."
"Anselm? He's not a prisoner. He's a resident of my lodge, and I came to take him home."
Anselm's head turned toward me.
His eyes were wet and clear for the first time since I'd met him.
"Mara," he said, "he took my pills away. He said I'd talk better without them."
"That's a lie told by a confused old man," Dewitt said gently, and drank the coffee himself.
Behind the chair, Faulk's Beta shifted his weight onto his good leg.
Four more men stood back in the shadow of the pump house.
"Here's what I'd like," Dewitt said. "I'd like you to come back to Hearthside as my guest. A nice room, a nurse, a little tonic at night for the nerves."
"No."
"You're carrying something valuable. It should have a proper keeper."
He glanced at Ronan.
"Not a name and a coat."
"Kneel," I said.
The weight in my chest came down at once.
It was ten times what it had been in the hospital lot.
Dewitt's smile held.
He took a slow step toward me, and then another, and he did not kneel.
"Four generations of Alphas," he said. "My blood's older than this valley's roads, my dear. You borrowed yours last week."
My knees bent under me.
Ronan caught my arm before I went down.
"Now," Dewitt said.
The Beta put both hands on the wheelchair and tipped it over the edge.
