Chapter 35: Viral

On Monday morning Opal Harkness held a press conference on the steps of the Brackett courthouse, and she played the video.

I watched it on Joanne's phone in the DSW parking lot.

The gray hat had called an emergency session of the Moot on Sunday.

Nine Alphas had looked at a photograph of a pair of hands, and they had agreed, unhappily, that hands were not proof.

The Cold Creek Alpha had stood up and sworn that the woman in the old photograph was his great-uncle's wife, and that the family had buried an empty box for her.

The Moot had called it a family story, and no one had moved to open the grave.

The Director stood at a podium with the state flag behind her.

She wore her navy suit and her white gloves, and her two collared wolves stood at her heels with their eyes on the ground.

"Citizens," she said, in her cold, pleasant voice. "The Registry has a duty to the public. I would like you to see why."

A screen came on behind her.

It was security footage from the Cinder Falls Market, shot from above, grainy and silver.

A woman in a cardigan pushed a cart across a parking lot with an armful of oatmeal.

I knew her.

She spoke a single word of command, and the row of guards dropped to the asphalt.

"This is a state employee," the Director said. "A caseworker of the Department of Shifter Welfare. She can compel any Lycan in the valley to kneel. Last year she compelled nine Alphas on a public road."

A murmur went through the reporters.

"The Registry calls this what it is. Mind control. And the department that employs her has seen fit to give her a seat on a court."

"Does she control humans?" a reporter shouted.

"We do not know," said Opal Harkness. "That is why we have asked her to wear a collar."

Joanne took the phone out of my hand.
