Chapter 22: Her Choice

I packed in my old bedroom in Leon's house with one bag.

It took ten minutes, because I had nothing in that house I wanted.

Pat sat on the stripped bed and watched me fold my green dress.

"You're leaving it?" she said.

"I'm taking it. I'm going to burn it somewhere nice."

"I'll bring marshmallows."

Dinah knocked on the open door with a tray in her hands.

It held a pot of tea and two cups, as it always had.

"I'm not trying to keep you," she said. "I thought you might want one last cup that I didn't make you drink."

I laughed, and I sat down and drank it.

It was good tea.

Leon came to the door behind her and stopped on the threshold.

He had shaved, and his eyes were red.

"I don't want to come in," he said. "I wanted to give you this."

He held out a folded sheet of heavy paper with a wax seal on it.

I knew the seal.

My father had signed that paper at the kitchen table, before the wedding, with my mother crying in the next room.

It was the debt note.

"The council witnessed me tearing it up an hour ago," Leon said. "That's the copy that stayed in the safe. Your family owes Redfern nothing. They never owed it anything that my father could rightfully collect."

I took it with both hands.

My throat closed up.

"Thank you," I said.

"It isn't enough."

"No," I said. "It's not."

He nodded and took that too, without arguing, and Dinah put her hand on his arm.
