Chapter 23: In Daylight

I walked back down the hill faster than I had walked up it.

Crispin was still standing at the open gate when I reached it.

I did not slow down.

"Lena," he said.

"I'm not finished," I said, and walked past him with my bag on my shoulder.

I heard his boots behind me on the gravel, and I heard him not ask.

The pack hall was full again.

The midday meal had been laid for the visiting packs, who were leaving that afternoon, and the long table ran the whole length of the room.

It was the same table where I had eaten my wedding breakfast.

I put my bag down on the head seat, in the place where I had once sat in a green dress and a lace collar.

Then I climbed onto the bench.

Conversation stopped, table by table, until the only sound in the hall was a spoon rolling off a plate.

I saw the old Alpha at the council end, with a piece of bread halfway to her mouth.

I saw Leon and Dinah at the far end, sitting side by side with a space between them, and Dinah's hand sitting next to his, not quite touching.

I saw Pat in the doorway to the kitchen with a flour sack in both arms.

"I'm Lena Guthrie," I said. "Most of you know that already."

A few of them laughed, uncertainly.

"Four years ago I was married in this hall," I said. "The next morning I sat at that seat, and a man I had known for six weeks asked me, over the jam, whether I minded that he'd been with someone else."
