Chapter 9: Rooftop Rules

I called my boss from the loading bay, on the steps of the black bus, with my knees pulled up to my chest.

It was a quarter to six at home.

My boss picked up on the first ring and did not say hello.

"Is any of this true?"

"No," I said. "None of it. She's my ex-best friend. She took my boyfriend and a trip I paid for, and she's trying to take my job because I made her look bad in front of people."

"I've got a screenshot of you at a hotel, a video of you outside a bus, and a very long email."

"I know."

"Louisa, I can't have a client's dog hear that you're dangerous."

"I'm not asking you to believe me," I said. "I'm asking you to look at who sent it."

A hand came down beside my ear, open, with a phone in it.

Eli had come out of the bus door and sat on the step above me.

He didn't say anything, and he held the phone out.

I frowned at him.

He mouthed the word *please*.

"Hold on," I said to my boss, and I took the phone.

The screen showed a name I knew from a thousand posters.

"Hello?" my boss said.

"Hi." Eli's voice was low and tired. "This is Eli McCarthy. I'm a musician. I'm in Lisbon, and I'm going to tell you something about your employee that you can verify with my tour manager and my publicist."

My boss was quiet for a long time.

"I'll send you a statement from my official email tonight," Eli said. "The woman who wrote you is a guest on my tour. She's been lying about who she is. Your employee has done nothing wrong, and she stood up for herself in front of eight thousand people today. I put my name on that."

"I'll read it," my boss said finally. "Tell her to call me tomorrow."
