Chapter 11: The Lamp
I did not sleep.
At seven in the morning I stood in the second-floor hallway of the brick building.
I had driven there without deciding to.
His silver sedan sat in the lot below, so I knew he was in.
The door at the end of the hall was unlocked.
I pushed it open.
Julian sat at his desk in shirtsleeves with a cup of black coffee and a laptop.
He looked up and saw my face.
He closed the laptop slowly.
"Mallory," he said. "You're early."
"Where is it?"
"Where is what?"
I walked past him to the bookshelf.
The lamp sat on the second shelf, brass and green glass, the shade tilted toward the couch.
I lifted it.
The base was heavier than it should be.
I turned it over, and in the felt at the bottom I found a black circle the size of a button, and a pinhole lens looking at the room.
I stood there holding it.
The room went very still.
"Put it down," Julian said quietly.
I didn't.
I threw it.
It hit the wall beside his head and shattered the green glass across the carpet.
