Chapter 20: Old Christmas
Dovie's POV
The Elk Fork pack eats Old Christmas supper at the long table in the packhouse hall, with the whole pack down both sides.
I had served that supper for twenty-six years.
I had never once sat at it.
That night Burl had saved me a chair halfway down, with the cubs on one side of it, and I sat in it with my back straight.
Duncan stood behind me against the wall with his arms folded and his mouth shut.
He had not said a word since the truck.
He kept one hand flat on the back of my chair, where nobody could see it but me.
Loyal Gragg sat at the head, in his bolo tie, with the pack's Bible in front of him.
Beside the Bible lay the thin black book where he wrote the names.
Royce sat on his right with his arm out of the cast and his eyes on his plate.
Nobody said grace. Loyal's blessing ran long, as it always did, and he thanked the Lord for the pack's health and the Roan's good neighbor.
He gave Duncan a smile that was warm and wet.
Duncan did not smile back.
When the plates were cleared, Loyal stood.
