Rafe's POV
I stayed in the operating room until the overhead light burned out at three.
Then I stayed in the dark.
I had spent fourteen years thanking a woman I'd invented.
She was thirty and kind and had died on a wet road in Ohio.
I had given her a name once, Grace, in the quiet part of my head, and I'd said it every April.
I had no idea what the real one sounded like in my father's mouth.
I drove to Fox Chapel with the windows down so the cold would keep me awake.
The study light was on.
It always was.
My father had not slept more than four hours a night since my mother died.
He did his best work at that hour, in a silk robe, with a pot of tea and a ledger.
He looked up when I opened the door.
"Rafael. It's four in the morning."
"I want the donor's name."
His pen stopped.
"We have discussed this."
"A dozen times. This is the last, and there won't be another." I came into the room and stood in front of the desk. "I want the name of the woman who gave me her kidney."
