Chapter 16: Graveside
I went to Calvary Cemetery at dusk because I had nowhere else I wanted to be, and found I wasn't the first one there.
A black car sat on the gravel road.
On the hill by the yew tree stood Rafe, in his shirtsleeves, with a woman in a wheelchair beside him.
Gran had a blanket over her knees and her white braid over her shoulder.
On my mother's grave stood a jam jar.
It was an ordinary glass jar with the label soaked off, full of yellow tulips.
I stopped on the path.
I could not make my legs go on.
Rafe turned and saw me, and didn't speak.
Gran did.
"Come here, girl," she said. "I'm cold and he's useless at this."
I came up the hill.
Rafe stepped aside so I could see the stone.
Beside the jar lay my gas-station tulips from last week, brown at the edges.
Someone had cleared the white carnations away.
"I asked the groundskeeper," Rafe said quietly. "I didn't touch yours."
"You brought a jar."
"You told me she kept them in a jam jar." He pushed his hands in his pockets. "I thought it would be wrong to bring a vase."
