Chapter 22: Rafe's POV: The Elevator
Rafe's POV
I reached the service elevator before my father did.
I had known the back corridors of that hotel since I was nine.
My father held every Foundation gala in the same ballroom, and I'd spent them all hiding behind the kitchen doors.
I put my hand flat against the closing doors and stepped in.
He came around the corner at a walk.
Two officers followed him at a distance, not yet running.
"Rafael," he said. "Get out of the way."
"No."
"You're making a scene," he said.
"Yes."
He stood at the open doors, a tall, silver-haired man in a gray tuxedo, and looked at me for a long moment.
The corridor lights hummed.
Behind him, in the ballroom, I could hear Megan's voice through the open doors, calling for a stretcher.
"You're going to do something stupid," my father said. "You'll hit me. You'll look like a man who attacked his father. The papers will print the picture."
"I'm not going to hit you."
"No?" he said.
"I'm going to ride down with you. And at the lobby I'm going to walk you out through the front doors in front of every camera outside, with your hands visible."
