Chapter 21: The Gala
Anselm tried to cancel the gala by telephone at nine in the morning.
Gran, in her plum dress, took the call on speaker with a cup of tea.
"The Foundation's charter says the event can only be stopped by a vote of the trustees," she told him. "I'm a trustee. I was awake for the last vote. I vote no."
He didn't try again.
By eight that night the ballroom downtown held three hundred donors in black tie.
A podium stood under a white spotlight, with a wide screen above the stage.
I wore the navy dress I'd married in.
Rafe stood beside me in a plain black suit, with his right hand against my back.
Gran sat in the front row with her cane across her knees and her good pearls on.
Adelaide sat at the head table in cream silk, smiling at nobody.
Dr. Osgood sat at the end of it in a tuxedo that hung off him, with a drink he wasn't drinking.
Anselm took the podium at nine.
His speech was beautiful.
He spoke of forty years of care, of seven hospitals, of the families who gave in grief so that others might live.
When he reached the Lifetime Achievement Award, he turned to the end of the head table.
