Chapter 20: The Night Before
The medical examiner's envelope came on the thirtieth of May, the afternoon before the gala.
I had requested it in April as next of kin.
It had taken six weeks and a letter from a judge Gran played cards with.
I opened it on the loft's kitchen counter, with Rafe standing beside me and neither of us touching the loaf of bread between us.
The report was four pages.
Cause of death: blunt force injury consistent with a fall from height.
Manner: undetermined.
Sixteen color photographs sat behind it in a plastic sleeve.
I turned to the fourteenth one without looking at the rest.
My mother's torso, on a steel table.
On her left side, below the ribs, ran a neat surgical incision about six inches long.
It was closed with staples.
It was clean.
The edges had not begun to heal.
The report didn't mention it once.
I stood there with the photograph in both hands and read it.
A flank incision.
A fresh nephrectomy.
Anyone who had ever held a scalpel could see it from the door.
