Chapter 10: A Week
I told him to go on Monday night.
He had spent the day in my shed holding things, a light, a hose, a socket wrench, and handing them over without a word.
He fixed a bilge pump, badly.
He ate lunch at the table with my son and answered four hundred questions about pumps and pistons and why the levee had floodgates.
He was good at it, in a way that hurt to watch.
At sundown, when the bell rang six, I walked out to the gravel where he was crouched beside Bastien helping him count bolts.
"Remy," I said.
He looked up.
"Go back to the church for a week," I said.
He went still.
Bastien looked from one of us to the other with a bolt in his fist.
"It's any sundown," I said.
"Fourth term.
"I'm saying it."
"All right," Remy said.
He did not argue.
He stood and wiped his hands on his jeans, and a muscle in his jaw jumped once.
