Chapter 7: Clause Four
"How did they get it?" Elias said.
He was standing at the window with his back to me, and he hadn't raised his voice once since the car.
That was worse.
"I don't know."
"Think."
"I took a photo of the contract on Saturday," I said. "I put it in the shared folder so I wouldn't lose it."
He turned around.
"Which shared folder?"
My stomach dropped to the floor.
"The one Winston and I had for the house. For taxes. I never took him off it."
"You put my contract in your ex-husband's folder."
"I forgot he was in it."
"You forgot."
"I've had a very strange week," I said.
He pressed two fingers to the bridge of his nose.
The gray cat watched us from the arm of the sofa with great interest.
"There are two hundred and eleven reporters on my doorman's sidewalk," Elias said. "My board wants a statement. My grandmother's cardiologist wants me to keep her away from her phone. And the whole country now knows what I wrote in that margin."
"I'm sorry."
"It was the only thing I asked you to protect."
"Wait." I stepped closer. "That's the thing you're upset about? Not that they're calling me a barren bride in every headline? Not that people are texting me pictures of a stork with a red line through it?"
"I'm upset about both."
"You said it first!" I heard my voice crack. "You said it on the terrace, to my face, with Cordelia's toast still in my ears. You said I was the only woman in that building the clause wouldn't hurt."
