Chapter 6: The Lyric Club

On Tuesday Elias left the penthouse at dawn and came home at noon, walking slowly and carefully.

"Gym," he said when I asked. "I pulled something."

He lay on his own sofa for two days with a laptop on his chest.

The cat lay on his feet and glared at me whenever I walked by.

By Thursday I had decided it was none of my business.

That was the day of the luncheon.

"It's at the Lyric Club, it's hosted by the Stockbridge Foundation, and half the board is going to be there," Imogen said in the car. "If you don't go, it looks like you're afraid."

"I am afraid."

"Then you'll go and look like you're not." She handed me a lip color. "That's what everybody does."

The Lyric Club had white tablecloths and fifty women in good wool.

I felt every one of them turn.

At the head table, Cordelia rose with her arms open.

"Leona, darling," she said. "How brave of you to come."

"Cordelia," I said. "Thank you for having us."

I sat between Imogen and a woman who had been at the gala and was now studying her salad with great interest.

The soup arrived.

It was a thin yellow thing with a swirl of cream, and nobody touched it.

"We were just discussing the foundation's spring appeal," Cordelia said to the table. "So many children in need. So many families who simply cannot."

She let the word sit.

A few of the women looked at me, and a few looked at their hands.

I put down my spoon.

"Cordelia," I said, clearly. "I've been wondering about something."

"Of course, dear."

"You told this family for six years that my chance of having a child was zero."
