Chapter 5: The Lobby

I put the green dress back on to go downstairs.

It was the only armor I owned.

The elevator took a long time to reach the lobby, and I used every floor of it to decide what I would say.

Winston was sitting on the marble bench by the fountain with his coat in his lap.

He stood up when he saw me, and his eyes went to the ring on my hand.

"You really did it," he said.

"I really did."

"Leo, I just wanted to talk."

"We can talk right here." I stopped four feet away from him. "The doorman can hear everything, and he's very discreet."

The doorman looked at the ceiling.

Winston rubbed his face with both hands.

He looked tired.

For one second I felt the old pull in my chest, the one that had made me say yes to him at twenty-five.

Then I remembered the yellow flag on the page.

"Mom did the toast," he said. "I told her not to do it in public. I said it was cruel."

"Did you say it to her face?"

"I said it to the mirror in the car."

"That's a no."

He flinched.

"Okay. That's a no." He took a breath. "It's about Mallory."

"I'm not interested in Mallory."

"Please listen. Please." He stepped closer, and his voice dropped. "She won't let me come to the ultrasounds. Mom says it's because she's emotional. And the dates are wrong, Leo, I've counted. I was in Aspen with Mom the week it would have happened."

"You can count that far?" I said. "How impressive."

"I'm trying to tell you something."
